Explore the headwaters of the Peruvian Amazon aboard the elegant, 28-guest riverboat Delfin II. Instead of sailing two days to reach the reserve, we drive an hour-and-a-half and meet the ship inside the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, so you spend more time in this rarely visited rain forest. Experience the wildness of the authentic Amazon and spot scores of birds, butterflies, pink river dolphins and meet ribereсos, natives of the reserve.

Itinerary Overview

Upper Amazon: Exploring Peru’s Pacaya-Samiria Reserve
Skim past massive lily pads, peer up at towering ceiba trees, go fishing for piranhas, and witness glorious sunsets on our journey to the headwaters of the mighty Amazon in the heart of Peru’s rain forest. Every day we slip through an intricate network of jungle waterways aboard motorized skiffs, spotting hundreds of bird species as well as sloths, tamarins and caimans.

Life Aboard Delfin II
With its hardwood floors, rattan-draped sofas, wooden slate hammocks and graceful, modern design, Delfin II is more than comfortable as our base for exploration. The only ingredients used by Delfin II’s chef that are not local are olive oil and balsamic vinegar – even the chocolates placed on your pillow each night are made on board daily.

The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve
This immense seasonal flood forest is delimited by two rivers, which meet in the easternmost corner of the reserve to form the Amazon River. Over 60% of the birds in Peru reside in the reserve, while rare pink river dolphins swim its waters, and red howler monkeys swing through its jungle canopy. We’ll even get a chance to meet the native people – called ribereños – who rely on sustainable fishing, hunting and agriculture, just as their ancestors did.

Huge Savings on Machu Picchu and More

The American Adventurer

The morning mist clears high in the Peruvian Andes, and at last you see it: Machu Picchu. You’re sweaty, you’re muddy, you’re tired—and you couldn’t be happier. You’ve arrived after four hard days of hiking, and while you know there are all kinds of ways to see this fabled lost city, you’re sure now that there’s only one way to really earn it. What’s adventure travel all about, you wonder, if not putting everything you’ve got into reaching your goal?

Well, maybe not everything. You, after all, paid less than everyone else in your group for the right to reach Machu Picchu, because you knew that some adventure travel operators offer discounts on “late availability” departures: scheduled trips that still have spaces available.

It’s not a new concept in the travel industry—airlines have been doing it for years—but last-minute discounts are still a relatively untapped source of savings for most adventure travelers. This year, why not skip that boring staycation and consider one of these great deals instead?

Hiking to Machu Picchu

Friends Travel is offering 20 percent off two late-summer departures on its eight-day Inca Trail trip. Normally $760 per person (plus a local payment of $300), the discount shaves more than $150 off the price of the August 30 and September 2 departures, bringing the base price down to $608. The trip starts in Lima and includes accommodations, guides, six breakfasts, three lunches, and three dinners. Because permits for the “classic” Inca Trail route sell out far ahead of time, these last-minute departures hike the alternative (i.e., less crowded) Lares Trek route to Machu Picchu. All specials are subject to space availability and can be withdrawn at any time. First come, first to get the best values.

Mysticism
Peru’s folk healers draw on their knowledge of the past to cure their `patients´ in ceremonies imbued with a mixture of traditional medicine, Catholicism and the use of hallucinogens, like the San Pedro cactus.

Weaving
Contemporary Andean weavers are heirs to a rich textile repertoire that goes back thousands of years. Condor Travel can arrange weaving workshops, lectures by weavers and textile experts and visits to Peru’s leading collections of ancient textiles. We can also organize excursions to some of Peru’s most famed weaving centers, like Chincheros near Cusco. For those interested in llamas and alpacas, tours to camelid breeding stations and modern factories in Arequipa and Lima can also be arranged.

Archaeology
The pre-Inca and Inca cultures of Peru created some of the most stunning artworks and monuments known to mankind. Condor Travel can tailor an itinerary to meet your interest in Peruvian archaeology, including visits to Peru’s major archaeological museums, slide lectures and visits to excavations in process, when possible.

Ecotourism
Peru, a privileged country claiming `megadiversity´ status, has 84 of the 103 ecosystems in the world and 28 of the 32 climates on the planet. It offers also some of the best ecoturism destinations in areas like the pristine rainforest of Puerto Maldonado or the canopy walkway near Iquitos. On request, Condor Travel will furnish detailed itineraries, maps and lists of what to bring.

Agriculture
Tailor made agriculture programs can be arranged for specialized groups interested in the different variety of products we export to other countries like cotton, asparagus, mangos, lucuma, etc. Lectures by specialists in this field can be also given.

Botany
Roughly 35,000 species of plants exist in the Peruvian territory, over 20,000 have been identified and the rest are endemic. There are around 900 species of orchids and also many types of medicine plants that have been extracted from the forest trees, shrubs and flowers like `uña de gato´ (cats claw), hallucinogenic plants like ayahuasca, etc. You can also find in the Andes, rare plants like Puya Raimondi, considered the world’s largest bromeliad, with 8,000 inflorescence and sizes of up to 10 meters high.

Birdwatching
Because of its tropical location and its large number of ecosystems, Peru is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Condor Travel can prepare customized birdwatching tours, led by expert ornithologists, to a variety of wildlife reserves and unique birdwatching areas, ranging from the tropical dry forest of northern Peru, to coastal wetlands filled with resident and migratory birds, to the imposing Andes and its majestic condor, and to the eastern flanks of the Andes and the lowland rainforest.
